Newcastle Castle
A focal point of the trail, the castle ruins at Newcastle stand majestically overlooking the town. This medieval stronghold, dating back to the 11th century, offers a glimpse into the town's feudal past, serving as both a defensive structure and a noble residence.
Tythe Barn
This impressive building reflects the agricultural heritage of Bridgend. The Tythe Barn represents the medieval practice of collecting taxes in kind, showcasing the importance of farming to the local economy. Farmers would contribute a tenth of their produce to give to the church, with the produce being stored in the Tythe barn.
The Old Stone Bridge
If you’ve been to Bridgend town centre, you’re bound to have admired the intricate craftsmanship of the old bridge, a Grade II* Listed structure which has stood the test of time since 1425. The bridge is a Scheduled Monument and was built to allow people and small carts to cross the River Ogmore.
First Clean Water Drinking Fountain
One of the more unique points on the trail, the first clean water drinking fountain marks a significant milestone in public health and welfare in Bridgend. Constructed in 1860 by J.W Hugall, its historical importance resonates with today’s emphasis on sanitation and community well-being.
