About
This is one of a series of cast-iron mileposts, dating from 1836 and designed with a mixture of Gothic and Classical detail. The milepost was used to mark the distance from / to other villages or towns for stagecoaches and their passengers; this particular milepost reads ‘London 177 miles, Cowbridge 7 miles, and Pyle 6 miles’ and is located on the corner of Caroline Street and Dunraven Place. The Structure is Grade II Listed.
Stagecoaches were so called because they travelled in ‘stages’ of 10 to 15 miles, at which time horses would be changed and travellers could refresh themselves. This milepost was formerly attached to the Ship Hotel, a building which has since been demolished, but which was a coaching and posting inn providing an ideal stopping off point for the stagecoaches in Bridgend.
