The War Memorial was built in 1921 and is located within Dunraven Place. It was designed by Walter Crook and sculpted by Messrs H. H. Martyn and Co Ltd of Cheltenham. The memorial is made from Portland stone with a tapering obelisk with the figure of Britannia. Above the figure are the symbols for sacrifice and victory – a cross surrounded by a chaplet of bay leaves. The memorial was created to remember those who lost their lives during World War I (1914-1918), their names are included within plaques on the sides of the monument.

Later conflicts are also recorded on the statue’s base and sides. These include World War II (1939-1945), with a later addition added to one of the plaques for J. Evans Malaya 1955. A stone flower urn, located on the base of the monument, is dedicated to the British Legion Women’s Section dated to 1938. A joint memorial plaque is located on the base of the monument for the members of the Merchant Navy who lost their lives during WWI and WWII. There are four smaller stone plaques which remember four service personnel who lost their lives during more recent conflicts including the Falkland’s War, Iraq War and in Afghanistan. Their names, units and year of death are etched into the plaques.
