The first mention of a post office in Bridgend was in 1892, when it was located in the Davis Building, on the corner of Caroline St and Queen St. The post office later moved to a collection of buildings close to Bridgend train station. These included the former Post Office Van Depot on Derwen Road, the sorting office located on Station Hill and the main Post Office building on Court Road. The Post Office Van Depot was originally built as a Fire Station in 1936 (a large electric bell located on the front elevation of the building possibly relates to this past function). The building also has a rare Edward VIII insignia on its front elevation and is now Grade II listed as a scarce public building from the reign of Edward VIII.

The depot building connected by a spiral staircase, a lift and mailbag delivery slide, to a sorting office located on Station Hill. The sorting office in turn was connected to the main Post Office on Court Road. This collection of buildings were in use until the 1970’s when the Post  Office relocated to its current location in Dunraven Place. The sorting office and depot moved operations to Tremains Road.
