The original Ruhamah Welsh Baptist Chapel was founded in 1808 in an old barn close to Newcastle Castle. It remained a place of worship until 1890, by which time the congregation had grown and the site was not central enough. As a result of this, the Chapel relocated to Wyndham Street on land donated by the Earl of Dunraven.

The original Ruhamah was abandoned in 1894 leaving only the small cemetery containing deceased residents mainly from the immediate area. The new Ruhamah Chapel had no cemetery, and the former small burial ground was used until there was no more space. Around 1994, Ogwr Borough Council commissioned a conservation project to restore the cemetery as it was in a state of disrepair. Since then, it has been annually maintained and kept in reasonable condition.
